Dennis Carl Barghaan, Sr., 79, of Lincroft, died on Saturday, October 17.
Dennis was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. Upon graduating from McKee Vocational High School, Dennis honorably served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War era. Upon returning from his service, he married the former Barbara DeVito and raised his family in Lincroft. During a lengthy and successful career, Dennis served in numerous roles in the financial industry, before retiring as the National Sales Director for MetLife Securities.
In addition to his family and close friends, Dennis’s true passion was the game of golf. He was an accomplished player, winning the Club Championship at Bamm Hollow Country Club twice, and competing to qualify for a number of United States Golf Association championships at courses across the nation. He never missed an opportunity to play, regardless of where he was in the country (or, indeed, the world). Dennis ran five marathons, including two New York City Marathons. He was also an avid sports fan, and would consistently follow his beloved New York Yankees, whether on TV or the radio. His depth of sports knowledge was immense, which assisted him during an appearance on “Sports on Tap,” ESPN’s sports trivia game show. And for a period, Dennis was the color commentator on local cable coverage of Middletown High School South football games.
Dennis is predeceased by his parents, Loretta and Herbert Barghaan, and his brother Bert Barghaan.
Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Barbara, their children, Dennis (Laura) of McLean, Virginia, and Scott (Suzanne) of Frederick, Maryland, and his grandchildren Kara, Ashley, and C.J. (Christian Joseph).
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 27 from 2pm - 4pm and 6pm - 8pm at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at a time to be announced at St. Leo the Great, 50 Hurleys Lane, Lincroft. Entombment will follow at St. Gabriel Cemetery & Mausoleum, Marlboro.
In lieu of traditional remembrances, Dennis’s family asks with gratitude that donations in his memory be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinsons.org) or the First Tee of Metropolitan New York (firstteemetny.org).
